Teacher reviews

How we calculate ratings.

One combined score out of 5, with the source and basis of each review shown clearly.

Total eligible scores ÷ number of scored reviewsEach distinct published experience has equal weight.

What counts towards the score

The combined score includes eligible reviews written on MyTeacherFinder, permitted imported reviews and teacher website testimonials. Each must relate to a genuine individual experience with the teacher or organisation. We count the same experience once, even if it appears in several places.

All included scores are out of 5. We round the average to one decimal place. For example, five eligible reviews with scores totalling 23 produce a combined score of 4.6 out of 5. There is no starting score, hidden weighting or paid boost.

Reviewer ratings and AI estimates

A review written here uses the author's chosen rating from 1 to 5. If an imported review already has a five-star rating, we keep that rating.

Where genuine imported feedback has text but no rating, its wording may be assessed using AI to propose a score from 1 to 5. It is labelled AI-assessed score. That score is our assessment of the wording, not a star rating given by the reviewer. Staff check it before publication. Unclear or insufficient feedback stays unscored.

AI-assessed scores count equally with reviewer ratings in our combined score. They can be wrong: read the feedback and its labels rather than relying on the number alone. You can report an estimate that does not fairly reflect the original wording.

Where the feedback comes from

Each imported review shows its source. Feedback selected for a teacher's own website is labelled as a teacher website testimonial. It may reflect only the feedback the teacher chose to publish, rather than all of their customers' experiences.

Published reviews can cover lessons, an enquiry or other direct arrangements with the teacher. You do not need to have booked through MyTeacherFinder or had a lesson. The context must be clear. Email confirmation checks access to an email address; it does not prove that tuition took place.

What we leave out

  • Drafts and reviews awaiting checks, or reviews that are rejected, restricted or withdrawn.
  • Duplicate accounts of the same experience and another platform's headline average.
  • Reviews without a clear connection to the teacher, or without permission for the intended use.
  • Feedback without an eligible score, including uncertain AI estimates.
  • Fake, incentivised or otherwise prohibited reviews under our review policy.

If a teacher has no scored reviews

The profile shows Average without a number or stars. This is a neutral label for a teacher without eligible scored feedback. It is not a calculated 3 out of 5 or an assessment of their teaching.

Replies, reports and changes

A claimed teacher can submit one reply to each review and report concerns. Replies do not enter the score. A report does not automatically remove a review, and genuine criticism is not removed simply because a teacher disagrees with it.

Approved author changes, restrictions and withdrawals update the calculation. Ordinary edits wait for checks while the approved version remains visible. Claiming a profile or paying an introduction fee does not change the score or buy a publication decision.
